After watching Wendy Drexler’s presentation “Teaching Web 2.0–Everything you need to know,” I feel like these Web Presentations can be very helpful in education going forward. For professional development, it allows teachers to view, review, and really grasp the new ideas at hand. We all have busy schedules and the opportunity to watch the presentation on our own time can be helpful. Also, when you go to a live presentation you might miss something or not understand a concept. Having the ability to review certain concepts can only be an advantage.
When we have meetings after school often times people are unable to attend. An option might be to send our teachers a podcast or videocast of the presentation so that teachers can watch on their own time. This would ensure that all teachers get all the information they need and not miss any meetings.
Of course this type of change comes with risks. Should we change the way we meet and always make it online, we take away the opportunities to be social and interact with colleagues. It is not a bad thing to have obligations and commitments and these after school meetings are just that for now, but soon they might turn into obligations and commitments on our own time as opposed to a set time. It is a slippery slope but one that if we manage correctly, we can ensure a safe landing.
